Pumpkin Smash

An organization, Scraps to Soil, in Idaho Springs promotes sustainable practices including composting. The Lions Club has supported their efforts.

Each year, Scraps to Soil holds a Pumpkin Smash on the Saturday after Halloween to promote composting the pumpkins.  But first, everyone has to have fun smashing the pumpkins with everything from a giant hammer to a catapult.

The event has become a major "happening" in town.  The Lions Club had a booth at the event this year, with a good chance to publicize who we are and what we do.

Lions Laura and Barb did all the work, and Lion Jim stopped by for a little while.

Our support for the Scraps to Soil sponsors seems to have been appreciated:

Trunk or Treat

Many people in the Idaho Springs area live in a country setting.  The kids don't have much chance to trick-or-treat, and the homes get few, if any, visitors.

So several organizations in Idaho Springs went together to create have an opportunity for kids to come for a Trick-or-Treat type of experience.  While they were at it, they thought it would be fun for the adults to have some visitors.  They set it all up in a parking lot.  Anyone who wanted to could bring their car, with treats in the trunk; costumes were optional, but a lot of people were dressed for the occasion.  The kids then had lots of places to visit.

The Lions Club had a trunk.

Lion Barb was ready...

... and Lions President Mary and Secretary Carolyn made sure that there were plenty of treats.

Fall Foliage Relay Fundraiser

Our club's fall fundraiser was helping with the "Flaming Foliage Relay" race.

It was a foot race with runners in teams of about 10, running 165 miles - all day and all night to the finish.  Our club members helped set up at the starting area, checked teams in, and checked to be sure each team had all the necessary equipment.  Our members also supervised exchanges between runners at checkpoints 1, 2, and 5.
